Overview

Our design principles serve as the foundation for every component, pattern, and decision in the Enara Design System. They help teams align on what "good" looks like and provide a framework for resolving design trade-offs.

Intelligently Personal

Our system uses technology to understand and adapt to the unique context of every person. Whether they are a patient starting their journey, a provider managing a caseload, or a clinic reviewing outcomes, the experience must feel personal, respectful, and empathetic. We recognize and accommodate the full spectrum of human experience, including cultural contexts, health literacy, and technological comfort.

Do

  • Simplify the interface for a first-time user, showing only essential tasks.
  • Use a user's self-reported expertise level to adjust the density of information shown by default.

Don't

  • Overwhelm a new user with advanced data dashboards they haven't been onboarded to yet.
  • Create a one-size-fits-all interface that fails to serve either novice patients or expert clinicians effectively.

Empower Partnership

Our design exists to build trust and foster collaboration between patients and providers. We make complex healthcare information accessible, clear, and actionable for everyone involved. When faced with a choice, we prioritize clarity that supports shared decision-making over a design that might be novel but creates confusion.

Do

  • Use simple language and visualizations to explain progress, ensuring both patient and provider are looking at the same source of truth.
  • Ensure the information hierarchy clearly supports a collaborative conversation about next steps.

Don't

  • Display raw medical data or jargon without a clear, plain-language explanation of what it means for the patient.
  • Hide critical information from the patient that their provider can see, undermining trust.

Evolve with Purpose

We balance the need for innovation with our commitment to stability and user trust. Our system is architected for methodical evolution, not disruptive revolution. Every component is built to be robust and self-documenting, enabling us to improve the system continuously without breaking existing user experiences or workflows.

Do

  • Introduce significant changes to a core workflow gradually, with clear communication and opt-in periods.
  • Build new features using established system patterns to ensure they integrate seamlessly.

Don't

  • Overhaul a critical user flow overnight, forcing users to re-learn essential tasks without warning.
  • Create one-off, custom solutions that are brittle and cannot be updated systematically.

Seamlessly Coherent

A person's health journey happens everywhere, not just on one screen. Our design system ensures the Enara experience feels connected and consistent, whether on a mobile app, a clinical dashboard, or through a voice interaction. While the interface will adapt to the modality, the underlying mental models, terminology, and brand promise must remain constant.

Do

  • Allow a user to seamlessly transition between devices, such as starting a task on mobile and completing it on a desktop.
  • Ensure core functionalities are accessible across modalities, building in accessibility from the start (e.g., voice commands as an alternative to touch).

Don't

  • Use different terminology or icons for the same feature in the patient app versus the clinical platform.
  • Design a visual-only experience that fails to work for users relying on screen readers or other assistive technologies.

Living Principles

These principles evolve as we learn more about our users, our technology capabilities, and the changing landscape of healthcare. They serve as our north star while remaining flexible enough to guide us through uncertainty and change.
